Who were Streets named after? This is a list of streets with who the street was named after. Sometimes it was not just a person but a whole family. Often that name was used because residents knew where that family lived and not having maps they often preferred to name the location after where a family lived than after the name some stranger put on a map. Of course we cannot be totally certain of this but is the most likely possibility.

Arsenal was named for the Tank arsenal known as the Detroit Arsenal.

Automobile Street named most likely by Piper Walter C who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles.

Busch Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.
Cadillac Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles.  
Campbell Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.

Chalmers Street named most likely by Piper Walter C who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Chalmers is a car that no longer exists.
Chapp Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. We have not figured this one out yet.  From Gerald Neil.
Conant  Street was named after Shubael Conant was the first person to legally buy much of southern Warren.  He was a Detroit merchant. He of course resold all of his land in southern Warren for a profit. Much of this land was very wet some of the year.  He was also an abolitionist and a Detroit Fire inspector.
Continental Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Continental was an old time truck.  From Gerald Neil.

Dequindre ave was named for Major Antoine Dequindre; land owner and veteran War of 1812; 1850.

Dequindre Street Named for the Dequindre family ribbon farm.

Dunn Street was named after a member of the family with the same name.
Eckstein Street named for George Eckstein a long time Village of Warren President and a one term sheriff of Macomb County according to Gerald Neil.

Engleman Street named after the settler of the same name. Hieronymous Engleman a State Representative from Warren in the 1870s and Civil War Veteran. Before this it was called Church Street and before that it was a farm pathway.

Essex Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Essex  is a car that no longer exists.  From Gerald Neil.
Federal Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke and subdivided the land. He named many streets after automobiles. The Federal was a truck. From Gerald Neil.
Fisher Street was named after the early settling family with the same name according to Gerald Neil.
Flynn Street was named after the above Family of Doctor John Flynn

Gratiot, Gratiot Avenue Began as a Native American hunting/travelling path. It's named after Gen. Charles Gratiot, the engineer in charge of the project.

Grinsell Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.

Groesbeck Highway - Named for former Michigan Governor Alex J. Groesbeck, wholaunched the highway project during his term.

Hayes Avenue - Common street name. Probably named for President Rutherford B. Hayes

Hazen Paul G Hazen Drive named after a Viet Nam soldier who died in Viet Nam.

Hartlein Street was named after the early settling family with the same name. 
Hartsig Street was named after the family with the same name. Gerald Neil stated that it was actually named for several members of this family who held public office. Principally for Jacob Hartsig Warren Supervisor 1887 - 1897.
Holden Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.
Hudson Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke and subdivided the land. He named many streets after automobiles. The Hudson is a car that no longer exists per Gerald Neil. The Hudson Hornet was the first car I drove (Wes Arnold) as a young man. Later when the car quit running I junked it. If I had put it up on blocks and saved it I would be rich now. 
Hupp Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke and subdivided the land. He named many streets after automobiles. The Hupmobile is a car that no longer exists. From Gerald Neil.
Jackson Street was named after the early settling family with the same name. This used to be called Loretta Street. according to Gerald Neil.
Jenerous Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.

John R road was named for large land owner and prominent citizen, John R. Williams; 1835. He was a general in the Territorial Militia, a member of the board of trustees at the 'new' University of Michigan and the first elected Detroit mayor in 1824.

Kaltz Peter Kaltz Street named after the settler of the same name.

Kaltz Street was named after the early settling family with the same name. Gerald Neil stated that John Kaltz was Warren Clerk in 1871-72. and Anthony Kaltz was Warren Treasurer in 1921-22.
Lyons Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.
MacArthur.Street was once named Piper Boulevard was named in honor of Walter C Piper the street was later renamed MacArthur to honor General Douglas MacArthur.
Marmon Street named perhaps because of other streets with automobile names or by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Marmon was a real fancy old car that no longer exists.
Maxwell Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Maxwell is a car that no longer exists.  From Gerald Neil who added “Maxwell a car,  Jack Benny has one.”

Mound Avenue/Road was Named for a large, ancient Native American burial (and ceremonial?) mound located in an area near the mound and seven mile road.

Murthum family was a pioneer family who settled in the area of the Warren Village. Murthum Street was named after the Murthim family.
Murthum The House located at 5820 Murthum was built in 1895.  This is a combination Greek Revival and Queen Anne (noted for gables, dental moldings, fish scale shingles and fretwork) design.  Several acres of land were used for the William Murthim School which was also known as Victory School.
Packard Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Packard is a car that no longer exists.  From Gerald Neil.

Piper Boulevard was named in honor of Walter C Piper the street was later renamed MacArthur to honor General Douglas MacArthur.
Republic Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. The Republic was an old time truck that no longer exists.  From Gerald Neil.

Rinke, Weingartz, Theisen, Busch, Wiegand, Kaltz, were all streets named after the settlers of the same name.

Rivard Street was named after the early settling family with the same name. This family was the second settler in Warren.
Saxon Street named most likely by Piper Walter C who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. This car disappeared after 1925. per Gerald Neil.
Streefkerk Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.

Teisen  Street was named after the early settling family with the same name.
Theut Street was named after the early Theut family. Also for Macomb County Sheriff Teut according to Gerald Neil. 
Timken Street named most likely by Walter C Piper who acquired land in southern Warren on both sides of Van Dyke  and subdivided the land.  He named many streets after automobiles. Timken was a manufacturer of car parts.  From Gerald Neil.
Weingartz Street was named after the Michael Weingartz family.
Wiegand Street was named after the early Wiegand family

Van Dyke avenue was named for prominent citizen and Mayor, James A. Van Dyke; 1885
Wilson street which was later named Seventh Street was named after the Wilson family early settlers.

The developers may have often used their relatives names in subdivisions.
